Below are listed many ministries and opportunities to serve the Lord by sharing your time and talent with your fellow parishioners. Ministry is not and cannot be something that we wait to happen to us or that we presume others will take up. Rather it is our active response to the richness of gifts that the Lord has bestowed upon us.
Eucharistic Ministers
Eucharistic Ministers assist in the setup for Mass and the distribution of Communion, both the consecrated Hosts and the Chalice of the Blood of Christ. Eucharistic Ministers assist in the setup for Mass and purify and cleanse the communion vessels after the Mass. Eucharistic Ministers can also receive additional training to bring Communion to the sick.
Lectors
From the very beginning, Christians have gathered together to hear the Word of God, and from the very beginning, there have been individuals entrusted with the task of reading the word. Lectors receive careful preparation and training so they may proclaim the 1st and 2nd readings in a clear manner that expresses the dignity of scripture. At Mass, along with proclaiming the Word of God, they also read the general intercessions. A lector should be comfortable speaking in public and is responsible to study and prepare the readings in advance.
Altar Server
Service at the Altar of God is a great honor. Adults, teens, and children in the 4th grade serve at our Masses. Training is provided and new servers learn how to carry out specific tasks they will be responsible for during Mass. In the beginning new altar servers are scheduled with experienced servers until they are comfortable. Those who serve at the Altar of our Lord are serving not only the priest but your family, the whole Church community.
Music Ministry
Music shapes the spirit and tone of the Liturgy. Musicians help the congregation find its voice and give expression to the meaning of our faith. It directs our thoughts and hearts to praise our Creator as we worship Him. Additional musicians and cantors assist in our various Sunday Liturgies. Both choristers and musicians are always welcome.
Sacristans
They are responsible for setting up the liturgical elements for Mass and they keep the church and articles used in the liturgies clean. This includes restocking candles and holy water; some light cleaning of the church, and washing of articles used in the liturgy. Sacristans serve on a rotating basis.
Adult Funeral Servers
This ministry is part of the pastoral care of our parish to those who have lost a love one. When a member of Christ’s Body dies, we, the faithful, are called to offer consolation to those who are suffering a loss. Funeral Servers offer support not only with serving the Mass and the ritual of the funeral liturgy but also through their prayerful presence during the liturgical celebration. We have a growing group of people who have stepped forward for training. If you have available mid-mornings and are interested in serving on the altar please consider this ministry.
Ushers
Ushers act as greeters, welcoming and assisting those arriving for Mass. They assist those using wheelchairs or walkers and take up collections. They also help reset the pews at the conclusion of Mass.
Ministry of Consolation
The Ministry of Consolation is a volunteer group of parishioners from both St. James and Immaculate Conception who have received training to console and support those who have lost a loved one. They assist our clergy by attending wakes, assisting with wake services, helping people with funeral Mass planning, serving at funerals and providing outreach to those requesting ongoing support. The Ministry of Consolation also provides a grief support group roughly twice a year for participants to share their experiences with others in a small group setting. In addition, a group of dedicated crafters get together to prayerfully knit and crochet prayer shawls which are given to caregivers and bereaved family members. For more information, email [email protected] or call the parish office at 781-344-2073 and request a callback from Jane Griffin.
Grief Support Group
Parishioners who have experienced the loss of a loved one are warmly invited to register for a grief support group sponsored by our Ministry of Consolation.
Prayer Shawl Ministry
As part of our Ministry of Consolation, we would like to be able to offer prayerfully knitted or crocheted prayer shawls to those in the parish who are seriously ill or experiencing the loss of a loved one.
Prayer & Share
This group meets Wednesday evenings at St. James and welcomes those who would like to join them as they review and discuss the readings for the upcoming Sunday's Mass.
